Great Gungor Gathering - Review

On Wednesday, we had the honour of the Gungor band come in and hang out with us for a while. I always love it when the live version of songs and singing are better than the recorded. It is always nice to go see different artists in concert, but I think that it makes the music even more richer when you get to know the artists a little bit better. When artists go to different store and do an in-store (even if it is not at Baker Book House) I greatly encourage you to go and sometimes see a different side of the artists. What I love about the time that different artists come to a more relaxed setting if the opportunity to ask them questions and express how much a certain song means to you. I know for a fact that artists love hearing from their fans, and in-stores are a great chance to do this. If ever you have questions or comments for an artist that is coming in to our store, but you are unavailable to come just send me an email (music@bakerbookstore.com) and I will talk to the artist for you and then let you know what they say. What I reflect back from Wednesday was these three things: Amazing talent, amazing people, and amazing God.

The Month of January was one of a short break after the crazy Christmas season. Most of the new releases were at the end of the month. This allowed for new releases from the fall to shine first in the new year.

To Save a Life - Review

Over the weekend I saw the movie To Save a Life. For those who have not yet heard of it, it is an Indie movie, meaning it was made by a company that is not strictly Christian. The film does have a Christian theme. It is the story of young man who has it all: popularity, a pretty girlfriend, basketball stardom, a free ride scholarship to one of the top basketball universities in the nation, and a wealthy family. Despite all this, something is missing in this picture: his childhood best friend. The young man's world is shaken when that abandoned best friend commits suicide in front of him. He not only comes to Christ, but learns what it means to follow Him. This movie remains an Indie film by not mentioning the word "Jesus", but it does cover everything teens go through today: drinking, drugs, pregnancy, suicide, cutting, posing, the need to be loved, divorce, and abortion. Although this film gets pretty heavy, it inspires viewers to overcome those issues with God's help. Uncomfortable for some, but relevant for many. Not recommended for younger viewers, but a must see for many teens.
